ABSTRACT

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser Syndrome is a congenital malformation in which there is failure of the Müllerian ducts to develop resulting in absent uterus and fallopian tubes and variable malformationsof the vagina. Ultrasonography reveals absence of uterus with normally visualised ovaries

ABSTRACT

Objective of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic yield of X-rays taking CT scan as gold standard in acute and chronic sinusitis. Validation study. The study was conducted in the Radiology Department CMH Rawalpindi, from 1[st] Aug 2007 to 31[st] July 2008. This study involved 95 patients of both genders above 18 years of age who presented with acute and chronic sinusitis in ENT department of CMH Rawalpindi. Patients were referred to Radiology department for their X-ray paranasal sinuses [PNS] and findings were correlated with CT scan. Out of 43 patients clinically suspected of having acute sinusitis, x ray PNS shows imaging findings of acute sinusitis in 26 [60%] patients while 17 patients were having normal x-ray PNS. When CT scan was performed to correlate the findings, it showed 30 [69%] patients were having acute sinusitis while 13 [30%] patients had no imaging findings of sinusitis. Out of 48 patients, x ray PNS showed chronic sinusitis in 26 [54%] patients and 22 patients were having normal x ray PNS. While CT scan showed 33 [68%] patients were having chronic sinusitis and 15 patients were normal. Four patients either didn't reported for their CT scan or they refused to get their CT scan done. Plain radiographs were once the mainstay of diagnosis of sinus disease and now have been replaced by high-resolution CT scan for the evaluation of acute and chronic sinusitis. Plain radiographs do not allow adequate evaluation of the osteomeatal complex or the sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses because of overlapping anatomic structures. CT is the modality of choice for imaging acute and chronic sinusitis and provides the surgeon with important information of the osteomeatal complex and normal variations, preoperatively

ABSTRACT

To determine the accuracy of three ultrasonographic signs that are liver surface nodularity, caudate lobe hypertrophy and hepatic vein flow pattern on Doppler ultrasound in detecting severe liver fibrosis in chronic liver disease. Validation study. Department of Radiology PNS Shifa, Karachi. Duration of the study was 6 months, September 2005 to March 2006. This study included 50 patients of both sexes from 30 - 60 years of age who presented with chronic liver disease in Department of Radiology PNS Shifa, Karachi. TOSHIBA [NEMIO 20] Doppler Ultrasound Machine with 3.5 and 5MHz probes was used to look for liver surface nodularity, caudate lobe hypertrophy and pattern of hepatic vein flow. After performing ultrasound, patients were sent for liver biopsy to compare the results with histopathological findings taken as gold standard. On ultrasound the sensitivity, specificty, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy were highest for liver surface nodularity in detecting severe liver fibrosis. Ultrasound determination of liver surface nodularity is a significantly accurate method for identifying severe liver fibrosis or cirrhosis

ABSTRACT

The objective of the study was to determine the role of ultrasound in rotator cuff tears and to calculate the sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of ultrasonographic findings in Supraspinatus tears with magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]. Validation study. The study was conducted in the Radiology Department CMH Lahore, from April 2004 to October 2004. This study included 40 patients above 35 years of age who presented with shoulder pain and were referred for Ultrasound shoulder in Radiology Department. They were followed for their Magnetic Resonance Imaging [MRI] performed in Children Hospital. Defence National Hospital Lahore and Military Hospital Rawalpindi. Out of 40 patients 17 patients were diagnosed as having rotator cuff tears on ultrasound while 23 patients were normal. When MRI was conducted in these patients, it showed 19 rotator cuff tears while 21 patients were normal. Out of 17 patients with cuff tears on Ultrasound, 10 showed full thickness tears while 7 had partial thickness tears. Out of 19 patients with cuff tears on MRI, 11 had full thickness tears and 8 had partial thickness tears. Ultrasound should be the primary diagnostic method for shoulder pain and detection of rotator cuff tears because it is economical, noninvasive, quick and easy to perform. The MRI technique should be used secondarily because it provides more information about extent of tendons and has lower risk of artifacts
